Purpose: | To provide college scholarships to high school seniors and to students currently enrolled in accredited four or two-year colleges who hold current Amateur Radio operator licenses. |
High School Applicants:College Students:
- At the time of their application:
- be classified as a senior in a school accredited by the Texas Education Agency;
- reside, and have resided for at least one complete school year, in Travis, Williamson, Bastrop, Hays, Burnet, Blanco, Caldwell or Lee County;
- hold, and have held for at least 12 months, an Amateur Radio operators license issued by the Federal Communications Commission;
- be a U.S. citizen, or within three months of becoming a U.S. citizen;
- Maintain at least a regular membership in the ARRL during the term of the scholarship grant.
- Preferences will be given to high school applicants ranked in the top 5%-10% of their class.
- Preferences will be given to high school applicants who can demonstrate regular Amateur Radio activity and/or community service involvement.
Number and Amount of Scholarships:
- At the time of their application:
- be enrolled in accredited four or two-year college;
- have a G.P.A of not less than 2.8 or the equivalent;
- be a graduate of a high school located in Travis, Williamson, Bastrop, Hays, Burnet, Blanco, Caldwell or Lee County;
- hold, and have held for at least 12 months, an Amateur Radio operators license issued by the Federal Communications Commission;
- be a U.S. citizen, or within three months of becoming a U.S. citizen;
- maintain at least a regular membership in the ARRL during the term of the scholarship grant.
- Undergraduate and graduate students are both eligible to apply.
- Preferences will be given to college students ranked in the top 10% of their class.
- Preferences will be given to college applicants who can demonstrate regular Amateur Radio activity and/or community service involvement.
Application and Announcement Periods:
- The number of scholarships will be based on the earnings of the Greenwood endowment.
- It is AARC’s intent to dedicate 50% of the Fund’s annual net earnings to scholarships;
- Priority in the award of scholarships will be given to students who are or will major in science, technology, engineering or math disciplines (“STEM Applicants”);
- If any scholarship funds are left after awards to STEM Applicants, the remaining funds will be allocated in the order of the class of an Amateur Radio applicant’s license with priority being given first to Extra Class license applicants, then to General Class license applicants and lastly to Technician Class license applicants;
- Scholarships will only be awarded to applicants that meet requirements and shall be limited to no more than $5000 per school year;
- Once the annual scholarship funds are exhausted, no further awards will be made for that calendar year;
- No applicant is guaranteed a scholarship;
- The decisions of AARC as to the award of scholarships are final;
- Scholarships are for the exclusive use of the scholarship winner to be applied to tuition, books, fees and other educational expenses;
- Awarded scholarships will be dispersed to the scholarship winner’s college of choice for use by the scholarship winner;
- Austin Amateur Radio Club, Inc. does not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, disability, marital status, military status or any other characteristic protected under applicable federal or state law in the award of scholarships.
- The annual Greenwood Scholarship application period will commence on January 1 in the year 2020 and close on March 1 of the 2020 calendar year. The application period may be increased in subsequent years, based upon the Fund’s experience in receipt of applications and may be adjusted from time to time to correspond to college schedules for acceptance and financial aid.
- All applications must be on AARC’s fillable-PDF application form (rev.07/2020) and must, to be considered, contain all information requested by the current application form.
- Scholarship application form(s) will be available on this page (below), at the commencement of each application period.
- Scholarship awards will be announced not later than May 1 for the application year 2020. The announcement date for subsequent years will be based upon the commencement date of the application period and may be adjusted from time to time to correspond to college schedules for acceptance and financial aid.
